Critical Mass Riders

On the last Friday of every month a loose group of bicyclers and other folks using non-car transportation gather en-mass and commute through San Francisco. With the volume they have most traffic comes to a halt around their route. This causes some grief to folks trying to get home. I happened to be in San Francisco this day and was surprised to see miles of riders moving like a giant snake down the streets. The group doesn’t have a defined objective and is very loosely organized. Some of the riders have been known to take advantage of the anonymity and power they are now wielding and have become abusive to drivers nearby or attempting to push through the group.

I’m not sour-puss on social action, but wouldn’t it be nice if these fine folks came up with a purpose? Otherwise you’ve got people with power and nothing to do with it. For more information on the group you can search Google or jump over to the Wikipedia entry.
